About Dental Implant Services

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants replace both the crown and root portion of a missing tooth so that it functions exactly like the natural tooth. The ‘root’ of an implant is a biocompatible titanium screw that is surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw and will fuse or osseointegrate with the bone in the jaw. By fusing with the jaw, it will firmly anchor the ‘crown’ of the implant in a process that typically takes about three (3) to four (4) months.

After this time has elapsed, the implant is then uncovered, and a small attachment is placed on top of it to connect the replacement tooth. Where a single tooth is missing, a crown will be placed while in cases where multiple teeth are missing, implants are used to anchor bridges or dentures in place.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Implants have fast become the preferred option for tooth replacement for several reasons, such as the fact that Implants:

  • Perfectly mimic natural teeth: dental implants mimic natural teeth in appearance with shade matching and anatomical form of the crown, as well as function because the titanium screw that replaces the tooth root allows you to bite with the same amount of force as a natural tooth.

  • Prevent bone loss: losing teeth, means the loss of bone mass in the jaw. Unlike dentures and bridges, because dental implants function like a normal tooth, they will stimulate the jawbone and prevent bone loss.

  • Are a permanent solution for tooth loss: while other options require repair or replacement periodically, dental implants are designed to last a lifetime.

  • Preserve facial structure: when teeth are lost, the jawbone shrinks, and this means less facial support (think sunken face and sagging cheeks) which will make you look older. Dental implants provide the same support for your face as your natural teeth and keep you looking young.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants can be used in a variety of scenarios ranging from the replacement of a single missing tooth to all teeth in one or both arches using an implant-supported denture. However, even though implants are suitable for use in most scenarios, they are still not for everyone.

A comprehensive evaluation including x-rays will need to be completed to assess your oral health. You are an ideal candidate for a dental implant if you have healthy gum tissue, are free from periodontal disease, and if you have adequate bone in your jaw to support the implant. Where there is inadequate bone volume, a graft may become necessary.
